A Prayer for Confidence That God’s Help Will Come Through

How could I possibly do it? How was I going to find the words, or even the strength, to tell the kids that our beloved and vibrant family dog of ten years was suddenly only going to live a few more months? I played out a series of scenarios and pondered this predicament as I approached my quiet time with the Lord yesterday morning. I knew the news would break their hearts. That it would be impossible to process and crushing to carry. And I didn’t want to do it. I wasn’t sure I could. Not without some serious help anyway. The undertaking, planned for only a few short hours away, certainly seemed outside of my ability.
Have you ever faced something that felt too hard to handle or plow through in your own power? Maybe it was also a difficult conversation you needed to have, a task you’d been assigned, or a season ahead that looked so incredibly heavy. Or perhaps right now, you see something on the horizon that demands a physical, emotional, or mental strength that seems nowhere near. A capacity needed that feels completely out of reach. I have been there many times.
But just as God does, he gave me a gift yesterday morning. It was a bible verse during my devotional time that reminded me of a truth I desperately needed that day. The truth is that God’s help is always there. Psalm 28:7 begins. “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.” The truth is, even if we can’t see it, sense it, or fathom its existence, God’s strength and help are absolutely always with us. What’s also true is that we absolutely can’t do the hard things without him. Or anything for that matter. And what a treasure that we don’t have to.
As I looked at the burden before me, yes, I felt inadequate. Yes, I felt weak. Yes, I had no idea what I was going to say. But as I poured over God’s promises, I was reminded that he knew the exact words the receiving hearts of my children needed to hear. He knew my words would be his. He knew that every bit of my help and strength would come from him. In the moment, and in every hard moment and day after. This I could count on. Always. And so can you.
Throughout the morning, with weak knees and a fragile heart, I reaffirmed my confidence in our faithful God and in his unwavering help. I pleaded and prayed for his help as the hours passed and the appropriate time approached. And God’s presence followed me.
The truth is, God and his almighty help will come through for you, too, just like he did for my husband and me yesterday afternoon. No, it wasn’t easy, but I sincerely felt God strengthening my spirit and soul. I sensed him speaking from my lips, and Mike and I witnessed him holding every heart in the room.
As tears flowed and emotions unfolded, I shared the same steadfast reminder to my kids that God offered me in my own moment of need. The reminder that I know I need day in and out. And I want to share it with you too: God is, and always will be, your strength when you need help. God is, and always will be, your shield when you need help. So, let your heart trust in him today and tomorrow, because God will always, always, always be there to help.

Lord God, I need your help. Every day I face big and small things, but there is not one thing I do without you. And thank you, Lord, that I don’t have to. Please help me remember this when I forget. When I feel overwhelmed by what’s before me, when I want to run, or when I don’t see a way through, remind me that you are my strength, my shield, and my help. And that you are with me and within me—closer than a call, cry, or glance away—always. Lord, increase my confidence in the truth of your sovereign care, so that I may point others to you and your help, too. I praise you for your constant presence. In Jesus name, Amen.
